Pony Clubber of the Year Award (The Pamela Duke Ottley Trophy) and the Challenge Trophy (retired)

The Pamela Duke Ottley Trophy is named in honor of a respected trainer, foxhunter, and graduate of Deep Run Hunt Pony Club. The Pony Clubber of the Year is not necessarily the person who has won the most ribbons or achieved the highest ratings, though those things may also have been accomplished. The trophy is awarded to the member whose hard work, dedication, and example truly reflect Pony Club ideals.

This trophy replaced the Challenge Trophy, which is permanently on display in the Deep Run Hunt Club.

The Susan Thompson Memorial Award

Susan Thompson first became aware of Pony Club as she walked around her new neighborhood and met DC Sue Satterfield who happened to be out walking her dog, Cheers. Susan's daughter Caroline joined Pony Club and was our first A rated member. Along with Caroline came brother Chris, and Susan, who was a tireless volunteer, encourager, provider, organizer, board member, treasurer and DC. Susan suffered an illness in 1997 and passed away in 2002. The officers, board members, parents, and members of DRHPC miss her greatly, and in her honor we have created this award.

This silver tray, given to a Pony Clubber or adult volunteer whose spirit of encouragement and helpful deeds remind us of our dear friend Susan, was first awarded in 1999 to Pony Clubber Megan Lacina.

The Cheers Award

Former DC Sue Satterfield had a wonderful little Jack Russell whose name was Cheers. Cheers spent much of his life at Pony Club activities and had a wonderful time playing with the kids and pushing a huge rock around with his little nose. The Cheers Award was established to honor a person, who, although not a member, is dragged along to Pony Club activities and pitches in to help with all kinds of tasks -- some heroic, some menial. The Cheers Award is a tiny ceramic statue of a Jack Russell and has been awarded through the years to wonderful folk such as Bob Satterfield, Christopher Thompson, John Tyson, Buck Woody, Colvin Hedgepeth (long before she was old enough to be a member in her own right), John Adams, and in 1999 to George Holt. There are others, but the Cheers Award is too small to be engraved! If you know who any other recipients were, please let us know so we can let their names go down in history!

1998 - John Adams
1999 - George Holt
2000 - John Tuttle
2001 - Robert Paca
2002 - Willie & Stephanie Fano
2003 - Vail Dixon
2004 - Barbara Ruqus

The Christopher Thompson Memorial Award

Chris learned to ride behind his sister, bareback, on Beau who carried them all over Tuckahoe Plantation. His first mount was Snowflake, and how he loved her. She was his pony and he said, "Boys should have girl ponies because they get along best with them." He also rode Star and Flirt. They had a great time and though each had much to work on, together they seemed to just have fun. Others remember Chris in different ways. Many of you remind me of him, and all of you have helped me keep his memory alive. As long as there is a new Pony Clubber, learning and enjoying riding and having fun, his spirit will be with us.

The enthusiasm and love of sport typical of Chris is what we wish to call attention to in this award. Often awards go to older, more accomplished riders and mounts, and forget the basic idea of Pony Club -- having fun on horseback.

Smiling, a gleam in his eye, just a touch of mischief, but never malicious. Warm and outgoing but with a touch of shyness. Happy and confident but eager for praise and beaming from ear to ear when a job was well done. This was Chris, but it could also be another young person. A new C1, Anne Kern embodies many of these characteristics: young, enthusiastic, growing and learning, eager and kind. I am delighted to present the Christopher Thompson Memorial Award to eleven-year-old Anne Kern.
